Welcome to Calculus I.

The course is based on the book 'Calculus: Early Transcendentals (5th Edition)', by James Stewart

Here are the rules of the Game:

  1. Some sections of Calculus 1550, as this section and Section 9, will be using an electronic system of assigning
and grading routine problems, called WebWork. We intend to begin the weekly assignments on WebWork
in the second week of classes.

The purpose of using WebWork is that the instructor can spent more time on the conceptual understanding
of mathematics and its application to a variety of practical problems. These sections are for students
who want to learn calculus at the level of its underlying concepts.

  2. There will be two tests and a midterm. The test will most likely be administered through WebWork.
Dates and details will be announced in class. The midterm will be on Friday, October 10, 2003 (tentative).
  3. The final exam will be a comprehensive exam.
  4. Homework will be done on WebWork. For a passing grade in the class it is required that you try at least
50 % of the homework problems. You should plan at least one hour per week for working on these problems.
  5. There will be no make-up test or make-up exams.
  6. Calculators are NOT allowed in tests and midterms.

It is normal to have problems with calculus, in particular at the beginning. You are highly encouraged to come to my office hours,
pose questions in class (or by email) and, in particular, to discuss the material with your classmates.

There will be free math help for students on Monday through Friday in Allen 39. Times will be announced at the beginning
of the semester on the door of Allen 39.

Class attendence is absolutely necessary.

Suggestions are always welcome.

Grading policy:

Homework 150 pts.
Tests 175 pts. each
Midterm 200 pts
Final 300 pts.

The final grade will be determined by the grading scale:

900-1000 points A
800-899 points B
700-799 points C
600-699 points D
There will be no curving.
