Pascal Triangle Unit Variations

This page shows how to fold a units for finishing off a pascal triangle model, and an alternative, more permanent locking method of joining together the units than the basic method shown previously.

Finishing unit for a triangle design.

Finishing unit for a square design.

A more permanent method of joining the units.

Finishing unit for a triangle pattern:

0. To begin with, the green unit is folded as the other units, but then we will proceed in a different way, to make an end unit.

1. fold up part of the model like this:

2. Repeat for the other similar flap.

3. The next few pictures show this unit being slid between the two it will sit between.

4. Now fold over the two sides:

5. Fold up the bottom part of the unit:

6. Then tuck each of the white triangular flaps into the pocket created in the last step:

7. Here's one tucked in. Then do the other.

8. This is what it looks like when finished:

9. Turn over, for a front view:

10. And the whole of the bottom row is completed in the same way:

A more permenent linking method:

Instructions for a stronger locking of units (this is no good if you want to be able to take your units apart and rearange them, but it is good for more permanent designs, though this may depend on paper thickness - this method is good for regular origami paper, but if you are folding from card it might make parts of the model too bulky.)

1. Here a green unit is being added:

2. First is is slotted into place:
dscf1481.JPG
3. Then one of these flaps is lifted up, as in step 1 for the finishing unit above.

4. Then you have to make sure part of the pink unit is folded up inside this flap:
dscf1483.JPG
5. Fold the flap back down again:
dscf1484.JPG
6. Then fold the triangular flap in half, making sure the pink flap is still inside:
dscf1485.JPG
7. Then the small triangular flap created in the last step needs to be tucked up and under the triangular pocket above it:

8. And pushed down flat inside:

9. Then repeat the last few steps for the other flap:

10. And tuck that flap in also:

11. Finally fold up the bottom, as for the original unit, and you're ready to add more units.

12. This is what the other side looks like:
