Financial Aid

LSU's PhD students in Mathematics are supported financially in various ways. The Mathematics Department does not offer financial assistance to MS students (the typical MS student in Mathematics is supported by an assistantship from a PhD program in another department).

  • The vast majority of our doctoral students are supported by a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA). The academic-year stipend in 2024 is $24,500. Teaching Assistantships come with a tuition waiver.
  • A few students are supported by a Graduate Fellowship from the LSU Graduate School.
  • Some students are supported during certain semesters by a Graduate Research Assistantship provided by a grant held by their dissertation advisor or by a grant held by a research group within the Department, such as the RTG (Research Training in Groups) grant from the National Science Foundation.
  • LSU subsidizes a high-quality health insurance plan for Graduate Assistants, whereby the student pays $700 per year. Students can opt out of this arrangement.
  • PhD students can apply for summer assistantships. Typically various forms of teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available.
  • All applications submitted by January 15 will be evaluated; top candidates will receive offers for a Teaching Assistantship subject to availability; the Math Department will apply on behalf of eligible students for Fellowships.
