Text: Stewart, Calculus, 5th edition (2003).

Course Description:   Math 1552 is a four (4) hour Calculus course designed primarily for engineering majors and certain other technical majors.  The student is assumed to be capable and versed in the standard Calculus I topics, taking limits, continuity, taking derivatives of fairly complicated functions, using derivatives, calculating the definite integral for basic functions, integration by substitution and the applications of integration to areas and solids of revolutions.  Roughly speaking, we will cover most of chapters 7 and 10-13 in Stewart, as well as Section 14.3, although not necessarily in that order.  A more detailed syllabus can be found at www.math.lsu.edu/courses/syllabi/1552.html.

Homework/Quizzes: Homework will be assigned regularly. THIS COURSE IS CUMULATIVE, SO IT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK DAILY IN ORDER NOT TO FALL BEHIND. Most homework assignments are to be completed and submitted through WebWork. Click on the button below to access WebWork. Your login is your PawsID, and your password should be initially set to be your SSN (no hyphens, no spaces). You will have the option to change your password (and should do so) as soon as you log in!

In addition to WebWork problems, I will list additional suggested problems from your textbook. These will not be collected, but will give you extra practice. Click HERE for a list of these suggested homework problems.

Quizzes based on the homework may also be given in class. These quizzes will be announced in class at least one day in advance.

Exams: There will (tentatively) be three in-class midterm exams and one comprehensive final exam. No calculators, books, notes, etc., may be used for any of the exams or quizzes, unless you are explicitly notified otherwise in advance. No make-up exams will be given, except in extreme cases. If you must miss an exam, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to notify the professor as soon as possible. The tentative exam dates are as follows:

Grading: Homework 20%, Midterms 15% each, Final 35%.

Office Hours: (Tentatively) MWTh  10:30-11:30am or by appointment
