Text: Hungerford, Abstract Algebra, An Introduction (2nd edition).
Course Description: In this course, we will study elementary properties of sets, relations, mappings, integers; groups, subgroups, normal subgroups, quotient groups, homomorphisms, automorphisms, permutation groups, vector spaces, and elementary properties of rings, if time permits. A prerequisite for this course is Math 2085 (linear algebra) or the equivalent.
Homework/Quizzes: Homework will be assigned and

Quizzes based on the homework may also be given in class. These quizzes will be
announced in class at least one day in advance.
Exams: There will be three in-class midterm exams and one comprehensive final exam. No calculators, books, notes, etc., may be used for any of the exams or quizzes, unless you are explicitly notified otherwise in advance. No make-up exams will be given, except in extreme cases. If you must miss an exam, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to notify the professor as soon as possible. The tentative exam dates are as follows:
Grading: Homework/Quizzes 20%, Midterms 50%, Final 30%.
Office Hours: During the regular semester: MW 2:00-4:00; by appointment
During finals week: 1-3pm, Thursday, Dec. 14; 3-5pm Friday, Dec. 15
