Several of our members have been accepted into the Taglit-Birthright Israel trip through Kesher. Hillel International also offers trips by schools. If you're Jewish, age 18-26, and have never been on a peer-group trip to Israel, Hillel offers the best ways for you to have the time of your life in Israel. If you are interested in spending next year's winter break with other LSU students, let us know ahead of time so we can plan a trip. One of our members has been accepted into one of Hillel's Winter Israel Experiences. The program is called "Green: Israel and Global Environmentalism". For more information, check out http://www.hillel.org/israel/travel/mission/default.

Our very own Kyle Goldich, President and Founding Member of Sigma Alpha Mu, VP of the Business College, an LSU Ambassador, a Group Leader of Stripes, and of course a former Executive Board member of Hillel, was crowned Homecoming King on September 23rd, 2006.

Our very own James Bullman, President of Tigers for Israel, was featured in the LSU Daily Reveille on the first day of school. Read "WAR and PEACE".

Our very own Moshe Cohen, past Interim Program Coordinator and current treasurer, was featured in the LSU Daily Reveille this summer. Read "To be Jewish at LSU".

Academic Affairs has approved the appeal by Hillel member Stephen Blitz to participate in LSU's Student Exchange Agreement with Tel Aviv. Blitz was first turned down because of the travel advisory by the State Department concerning travel to Israel. Follow along with Stephen throughout the year on his personal photo-blog site http://www.LSUinISRAEL.com.

If you would like to study abroad in Israel during your time at LSU, please contact us immediately, and we will provide you with information as to how to navigate through the administration.

LSU: The Center for Student Leadership and Involvement recognized Hillel for two awards this April: one for "Most Outstanding New Student Organization" and the other for "Program of Excellence" for Sukkot's week of events. Present at the reception were advisor Dan Novak, nominated for Advisor of the Year, senior Rachel Spinner, nominated for the Legacy award, and Moshe Cohen, Interim Program Coordinator and major facilitator of the Sukkot program. Tina Gargotta, nominated for the Unsung Hero award, was unable to attend. Although Hillel, having registered during the previous year, is not officially a new organization, it won the award based on its outstanding revival. (see pictures)

Hillel at LSU receives Soref Advancement Initiative grant! The SAI is a one-year intensive program that will include the following elements:

• Two seminars over the course of one year to set goals and develop plans to achieve them. All expenses for participation are covered by SAI.
• Intensive consultation via telephone and site visits to each campus by Hillel's Schusterman International Center staff.
• Group support for all participants via e-mail lists, conference calls and Web-based seminars
• Student Events: Additional scholarship money will be earmarked for student participation in key Hillel student programs such as: Hillel's Charles Schusterman International Student Leaders Assembly, Charlotte B. and Jack J. Spitzer B'nai B'rith Hillel Forum on Public Policy, KESHER and KOACH conventions, etc.

Students interested in participating in conferences and seminars should contact Moshe Cohen ASAP.

The mission of Hillel International, with which our Hillel is affiliated, is to enrich the lives of Jewish undergraduate and graduate students so that they may contribute positively as Jewish people to the world community.

Additionally, Hillel at LSU has adopted the mission to bridge the gap between Jewish and non-Jewish members of the community by providing educational social experiences.

• President: overseeing entire organization, handling public relations, developing campus and community coalitions
• VP of Programming: developing committees (Religious, Social, etc), meeting with committee chairs to program events
• VP of Membership: engaging new members, acting as historian, developing committees (Recruitment, Liasons to SAM and TFI), meeting with committee chairs to coordinate members
• Secretary: coordinating calendars (University-wide, SAM, TFI), sending listserv emails, keeping minutes at meetings, keeping contacts with liaisons and webmaster
• Treasurer: coordinating budget and finances, fundraising, handling grants/scholarships/conferences for members, contacting alumni

We've got a lot to do this summer, including welcoming freshmen to orientation, creating a calendar of events for next semester, and planning our first ever ALUMNI of JEWISH LIFE at LSU weekend!
