Course Synopsis

Textbook

Probability, by Jim Pitman

Course Description

Introduction to probability, emphasizing concrete problems and applications; random variables, expectation, conditional probability, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, stochastic processes.

The prerequisite for this course is Math 2057.

Course Content

The course will cover most of the textbook. Students should begin the class with a foundation in pre-calculus topics including algebra, functions, graphing, solving equations, and trigonometry, as well as multivariable calculus.

We will study the following topics:

Combinatorial Analysis
Axioms of Probability
Random Variables
Continuous Random Variables
Jointly Distributed Random Variables
Conditional Probability and Independence
Expected Value
The Central Limit Theorem and the Law of Large Numbers

Evaluation

Performance on the assignments and exams will be weighted in the final grade as follows:
WeBWorK assignments: 25%
Two in-class exams: 50% (25% each)
Exam 1: Friday, October 17, 2008
Final exam: 25%; Friday, December 12, 5:30 to 7:30
Grading scale: A--at least 90%; B--at least 80%; C--at least 70%; D--at least 60%.

WeBWorK assignments:

The periodic assignments are administered through the web-based facility WeBWorK. Each has an initiation time and a due time. They are graded electronically. To access and perform the assignments, go to the WeBWorK site. For your username, enter the first part of your xxx@lsu.edu e-mail address, that is, the "xxx" part before the ampersand, and for your password, enter your LSU ID.
