    Office Hours: These times are especially reserved for you, but other times can easily arranged by appointment. If you just drop by my office, Lockett 258, when I am there I am happy to discuss things, unless I have pressing deadlines. Please introduce yourself!

    Communication: The best mode of communication is to ask questions in class. Electronic mail and telephone messages are also good for after-class short answer questions and emergencies.

    Course Structure

    Text: Topology (2nd ed.) by James R. Munkres. This course is a preparation course for the Core I examination in topology. Be sure to review Chapter 1 for important set theory background. The course proper will cover General (Point Set) Topology: Chapters 1-3 (with selected topics in Chapters 4&6) and Basic Homotopy Theory and Fundamental Group: Chapters 9, 11 and 13 (with selected topics from Chapters 10, 12 and 14.) We will also introduce examples from simplicial complexes and manifolds.

    Concordance of Topics among Standard Textbooks

    Advice to Students: A good motto is: Focus on Conceptual Understanding! Plan on spending two hours each day reading the section(s) covered, reviewing your class notes and working homework exercises. The material in this course builds cumulatively and the amount covered in one week is substantial.

    I expect you to attend each regularly scheduled class and to keep up with the assigned work. Please discuss with me any emergencies requiring you to be absent, to be late for class or to leave early.

    Homework, Exams and Grading Policy

    Homeworks: To effectively learn topology, you must practice the discipline. Homework will be assigned weekly, selected problems graded and returned. These will provide foundation for studying for examinations.

    Homework Assignments

    Examinations: There will be a midterm, in-class examination, worth 100 points and a two hour final examination worth 150 points.

    If you miss a test, please leave a message at 578.1656, before the test if possible. In general, I do not give makeup exams, and it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me for an alternative assessment in case of a legitimate absence (see Student Code of Conduct). When a test is graded and returned, you should review it carefully. If you have any questions about the grading, please discuss them with me in a timely fashion.

    Note: The final examination will be comprehensive. The in-class final exam is scheduled for Monday, 8 Dec., 3:00-5:00 pm.

    Grading: The final exam will be 150 points of the total grade, the midterm, 100 points, and periodic homework & quizzes, 100 points, for a total course score of 350 points.
