Office Hours: These times are especially reserved for you, but other times can easily arranged by appointment. If you just drop by my office, Lockett 258, when I am there I am happy to discuss things, unless I have pressing deadlines. Please introduce yourself!

Communication: The best mode of communication is to ask questions in class. Electronic mail and telephone messages are also good for after-class short answer questions and emergencies.

ALEKS Requirement:

Course Structure

Text: Calculus, 7th Edition, Early Transcendentals by James Stewart. This calculus course covers Chapters Two thru Six & Eight. Review the material in Chapter One on your own as necessary.

Advice to Students: The motto of the author is: Focus on Conceptual Understanding! To do well in calculus, plan on spending two hours each day reading the section(s) covered, reviewing your class notes and working homework exercises. As this course meets every day, the amount of material covered in one week is substantial.

I expect you to attend each regularly scheduled class and to keep up with the assigned work. Please discuss with me any emergencies requiring you to be absent, late to class or to leave early.

Honors Component:    The honors component will consists of special homework exercises and coverage of additional topics.

Homework, Exams and Grading Policy

Blue Books: For redistribution for the hour tests, please bring five (5) 8 1/2x11in. (large: 16 page) blue books to class on Friday, August 28th. Do not write in the book or fill in the cover page.

Examinations: There will be four one hour, in-class examinations, each worth 100 points and a two hour final examination.

Despite Ms. Manner's plea, calculators, computers, etc. may not be used on the in-class exams, quizzes or final exam.

If you miss a test, please leave a message at 578.1656, before the test if possible. It is then your responsibility to request a makeup for legitimate absences. When a test is graded and returned, you should review it carefully. If you have any questions about the grading, please discuss them with me in a timely fashion.

Note: The final examination will be comprehensive. The in-class final exam is scheduled for Monday, 7 Dec., 12:30 - 2:30 pm.

Comprehensive

Grading: The final exam will be 200 points (25%) of the total grade, the homework, quizzes and attendance 200 points in total while each of the four exams will be worth 100 points (12.5%) of the total grade.


Letter Grades:  Letter grades based on a 10-point grading scale. A plus-grade is marked if you are in the top 20% of your decile and a minus grade if you are in the bottom 30% of your decile.  (e.g. >98%: A+,  >93<98: A; >90<93: A-)


WebAssign Homework: This section of Calculus will use the computer package WebAssign for the grading of homework. 

A WebAssign access code is included with your textbook, or you can purchase access directly from the WebAssign website without buying a book at all.  Access to WebAssign also gives you access to the e-book version of our textbook.  An access code may also be purchased without a textbook at campus bookstores.  If you plan to take calculus at LSU next semester as well, you should buy the multi-semester (Lifetime of the Edition) version of access.

In either case, signup for WebAssign and click:  I have a class key. The key for this class is lsu 8117 5466.  For your student ID, enter your LSU ID number (89....) without any hyphens or spaces.

Homework problems are indicative of the problems you will see on quizzes and examinations. They are crucial to your development of a mastery of calculus. Work additional problems beyond those assigned if needed to develop better understanding or greater facility. The beginning of each class period will be devoted to questions concerning previously assigned and graded work.

Manditory Disclaimers

General Education Disclaimer: This is a general education course designed to fulfill part of the analytical reasoning requirements of the university including the following area learning objective: LSU graduates will employ scientific and mathematical models in the resolution of laboratory and real- world problems.

Departmental Disclaimer: This is a five (5) hour introductory calculus course designed primarily for engineering majors and certain other technical or science majors. The student is assumed to be capable and versed in the standard pre-calculus topics: functions, graphing, solving equations, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. No prior exposure to calculus is assumed. Since this is a five hour class, the student should expect at least four hour exams and a final exam. Regarding the use of technology in the class room, no departmental policy is presently in place.

As a 5-credit course, students are expected to have ten hours of coursework outside of class per week, for a minimum time commitment of 15 hours per week.
