Visitors and New Students

Here is a useful link with information for visitors. At this site you will find an online map of campus (Mathematics is in Lockett Hall) and a directory of local hotels. There are 2 on campus: the Faculty club and the Lod Cook Conference Center. Also, the International Cultural Center (ICC) has a very inexpensive dormitory for new arrivals who need temporary lodging. And the ICC will pick up new arrivals from overseas at Baton Rouge airport or Bus Terminal when you arrive. Just let them know your itinerary using the information at their site. If you are driving to Baton Rouge, the Visitor Information Center right next to Pleasant Hall at the corner of Highland Road has maps and Visitor Hang-tags for cars. International students should check with the International Services Office regarding documentation, visas, etc.

Try these links: for on-campus apartments, for the Edward Gay and the Nicholson Apartments for Graduate Students, and for rental rates on campus. Another useful link is for Commercial apartments. This last online directory is also available as a free monthly publication, which is given out free in the Visitor Information Center on campus.

Sometimes an International Student needs special preparation in English before the start of the Fall Term. For this purpose, many students enroll for a summer in the English Language Orientation Program (ELOP) at LSU.

Graduate School Calendars and Schedule Books

The Academic Calendars and the Course Schedule Books with Final Exam Schedules are available at this from the Registrar. You can use the following link for the Graduate School Calendar.

Departmental Preregistration and Comprehensive Qualifying Exam Forms

Each fall and each spring semester it is necessary to preregister for the coming semesters. To begin this process, download and fill out the Departmental Preregistration Advising Form. For those who have not completed the Comprehensive/PhD Qualifying Exams at the intended level, it will be necessary at about the same time, near mid-semester, to sign up for these tests by downloading and filling out the Comprehensive Exam Sign-Up Form.

Graduate School Forms

In this handbook, you will see many Graduate School forms mentioned which need to be submitted to apply for degrees, for final exams for degrees, and to register a plan of study with the Graduate School. The Department's Graduate Secretary in Room 304 Lockett has many of these forms on hand, and of course the Graduate Records Office in David Boyd Hall has them too. Now you can access many forms directly from the Graduate School's web-site and download and print them, following the Graduate School's instructions. To do this, you may use the cross-link provided below, then select the heading Graduate Records, and then select Forms and Instructions. In addition, we have listed below the forms most often needed by our graduate students. If you open these forms in a Windows operating system, it is possible to fill out the form on screen and print it filled out, so that a typewriter is not needed. Use the link below the list of forms.

Dissertation Format, Tex Files

If you are writing your dissertation in LaTeX, the Department has available a current LaTeX format file for your LSU Doctoral Dissertation. It was written by one of our graduates a few years ago and has been used several times since. However, even if you use this format, it is vital that each student go through the required approval process through the Graduate School. To use this LaTeX format, be sure to download each of the following four files. Thesis.tex is the one you will LaTeX in the end. But this file will input the other three files at the beginning, as well as the Introduction and the Chapter files you will write. Here are the files to download or save to your own Texfiles directory:

We have available also a much more elaborate dissertation format written by Dr. Yi Tong. It includes sample chapters and illustrations. If you would like to download the complete format written by Dr. Yi, then download this Complete Thesis Format Folder. This folder shows also a working Table of Contents and a working List of Figures.

Beginning in Spring 2002, the Graduate School is requiring that all dissertations and theses be submitted as pdf files, for editorial checking and approval, and for final submission. LSU is now a member of the worldwide Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. You can download MikTeX software free from the web, or you can use it in the Department's PC Lab. The command dvipdfm will convert your dvi file into a pdf file with clean, clear fonts. The pdf fonts generated by the Unix software which is also available are less clear and the Graduate School prefers those generated by MikTeX and other commonly available PC software.

You should also visit the LSU Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Web-site for more information about the processes and procedures for this new, required method of submission LSU Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Home-page
