Math 4158

This fall we are running Math 4158 (Foundations of Mathematics). We had stopped offering it in 1989 (except for offering it once in 1995). It has always been under-enrolled. One reason is that it is an "orphan" course, not counting toward the Math degree at all. (Specifically, it is not counted in any of the six concentrations in the Math curriculum.) Thus, it is currently a "leisure" course. The only other 4000-level Math course not counting toward the Math degree is Math 4038 (Mathematical Methods in Engineering), which is a service course for the engineers.

The Undergraduate Studies Committee recommends the following three proposals:

1. The first proposal is to add Math 4158 to the list of electives in the Mathematics Concentration in the Math Curriculum.

2. The second proposal is to add Math 4158 to the list of electives in the Secondary Education Concentration in the Math Curriculum.

3. The third proposal is to change the wording of the list of topics in Math 4158. The old wording is:
"Real number systems, sets, relations, product spaces, order and cardinality." Proposed new wording:
"Rigorous development of the real numbers, sets, relations, product spaces, order, and cardinality."
