Course: MATH 7510 Topology I

Prerequisites: MATH 4031 and 4200 or equivalent
Grade: Based on homework (60%), a midterm (20%), and a final (20%). The precise date of the midterm will be announced in class. The final is scheduled for Thursday, December 6, 7:30 - 9:30 am. Homework assignments will be announced in class and posted here.

Course Description

The first half of this course will cover basic notions of general topology: topological spaces, continuous functions, connectedness and compactness, etc. This material is discussed in Chapters 2, 3, 4, and section 5.1 of Munkres. The second half of the course introduces algebraic topology: homotopy and the fundamental group, and covering spaces. This material is discussed in Chapters 9, 11, and 13 of Munkres. A good supplementary reference for this half is Chapter 1 of Algebraic Topology by A. Hatcher, available here:
