Text:  Rogawski, Calculus (Early Transcendentals Version). We will cover (portions of) chapters 14 though 17.

Prerequisites:  MATH 1552 (Calculus II).

Description:  In the third semester of the Calculus sequence, we extend the basic notions from first-year Calculus, differentiation and integration, and their interpretations and applications (tangents, optimization, area, volume...) to functions of several variables. We also study Vector Calculus, generalizing integration to line and surface integrals. These integrals arise in a number of applications (work, fluid flow, electricity and magnetism...), and are related to their predecessors by analogues of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Catalog Description: Three-dimensional analytic geometry, partial derivatives, multiple integrals.

Exams:  There will be three, hour-long in-class exams. The exams will tentatively take place in the weeks of February 14, March 14, and April 11. Exact exam dates will be announced in class. No make-up exams, except in extreme cases. If you must miss an exam, I will expect you to notify me before the exam takes place.

Homework: This section of Calculus III will use the computer package WeBWorK for the assigning and grading of homework.

WeBWorK assignments will be given throughout the semester. The first assignments are available now. You should make sure you can successfully log in, and begin working on it immediately. In total, WeBWorK homework will be worth the same as a single in-class exam.

I will assign other homework problems from the text (to be done by hand for practice) essentially every class. These homework assignments will be announced in class and posted at

Homework, both from WeBWorK and the text, will occassionally be discussed in class as necessary.

Final:  There will be a comprehensive final exam.
For Section 4, the final exam is scheduled for Friday, May 13, 7:30 - 9:30 am.
For Section 6, the final exam is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.

Grade:   Your course grade will be based on the final, the in-class exams, and the WeBWorK homework grade. The final is worth 30%, each exam is worth 17.5%, and the homework is also worth 17.5%. I may curve course grades. In any case, 90-100% is assured an A, 80-89% a B, and so on.

Important Dates:   January 25 is the last day to drop; January 27 is the last day to add; April 4 is the last day to withdraw;
Mardis Gras is March 7-8; Spring Break is April 18-22.

Notes:   Calculators, computers, books, notes, etc. may not be used on the in-class exams or the final exam.
