Textbook:
Advanced Engineering Mathematics, 6th Edition (with WebAssign) by Dennis G. Zill. We will cover Chapters 5, 12-15 of the text. The last section of Chapter 15 will be dropped. Make sure to purchase the WebAssign as the homework assignments will be given there. Use the Class Key lsu 6134 2945 to self-enroll from the site www.webassign.net.


Course Description:
Power series solutions to linear differential equations and special functions such as Bessel and Legendre functions. Fourier analysis, Sturm-Liouville problems and orthogonal function series. Separation of variables for partial differential equations with boundary and initial conditions.


Prerequisite :
One of MATH 2065, 2070 or 2090; and MATH 2057 or MATH 2058.


Lectures:

Time:  MWF  1:30-2:20pm.     Place: 113 Lockett Hall.


Office Hours:

MWF  12:30-01:30pm, or by appointments at  204 Lockett Hall.


Exams:

There will be three one-hour in-class midterm exams and one two-hour comprehensive final exam. No make-up exams will be given, except in extreme cases. If you must miss an exam, it is your responsibility to notify the professor as soon as possible.  The tentative exam dates are as follows:

Test 1: Monday, Sep. 25 
Test 2: Monday, Oct. 23 
Test 3: Monday, Nov. 20  
Final Exam: Saturday, Dec. 9 from 3:00-5:00pm


Homework/Quizzes:

Homework will be assigned regularly via WebAssign. Quizzes may also be given in class and they will be announced in class at least one day in advance.

Grade:  550 pts in total:

Webassign Homework/Quizzes 100 pts (scaled to 100 pts)

Tests 1, 2, and 3 100 pts each

Final Exam 150 pts
Grades will be assigned on a cumulative semester basis as follows: 90-93.9% =A-, 94-97.9% =A, 98-100% =A+, 80-82.9% =B-, 83-86.9% =B, 87-89.9% =B+, 70-72.9%=C-, 73-76.9%=C, 77-79.9%=C+, 60-62.9%=D-, 63-66.9%=D, 67-69.9%=D+, and 59.9% or less=F.

Important Dates:
Final date for dropping courses without receiving a grade of "W": Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017.   
Final date for adding courses for credit and making section changes: Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017.
Final date for resigning from the University and/or dropping courses: Friday, Nov. 3, 2017.
Labor Day holiday: Sep. 04; Fall holidays: Oct. 19-Oct. 22; Thanksgiving holiday: Nov. 22 (noon)-Nov. 26.
Final examinations: Dec. 04-09, and final grades (degree candidate) due: Dec. 12, 9:00am
