Office Hours: The times listed above are especially reserved for you, but other times can easily arranged by appointment. If you just drop by my office, Lockett 258, when I am there I am happy to discuss things, unless I have pressing deadlines. Please introduce yourself!

Communication: The best mode of communication is to ask questions in class or during office hours. Electronic mail and telephone messages are also good for after-class short answer questions and emergencies.

Course Structure

Text: Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler. This course covers Chapters One thru Eight.

Advice to Students: The motto of the author is: Focus on Conceptual Understanding! To do well in mathematics, plan on spending at least two hours each day reading the section(s) covered, reviewing your class notes and working homework exercises. The amount of material covered in one week is substantial, so keep prepared.

I expect you to attend each regularly scheduled class and to keep up with the assigned work. Please discuss with me any emergencies requiring you to be absent, late to class or to leave early.

Homework, Exams and Grading Policy

Webwork Homework: There will be periodic webwork assignments. These are mandatory. Your webwork exercise sets will count, in total, as an hour test. There will also be additional assignments from the exercises.

Examinations: There will be three one hour, in-class examinations, each worth 100 points and a two hour final examination.

Calculators, computers, etc. may not be used on the in-class and final exams.

If you miss a test, please leave a message at 578.1656, before the test if possible. It is then your responsibility to request a makeup for legitimate absences. When a test is graded and returned, you should review it carefully. If you have any questions about the grading, please discuss them with me in a timely fashion.

Note: The final examination will be comprehensive. The in-class final exam is scheduled for Saturday, 11 May, 10:00am - 12:00noon.

Blue Books: For redistribution for the hour tests, please bring four blue books to class on Friday, January 18th. Do not write in the book or fill in the cover page.

: The final exam will be 200 points (33%) of the total grade, and the homework and each of the exams will be worth 100 points (16.7%) of the total grade.

Homework: This section of Math 4153 will use the computer package WeBWorK for the assigning and grading of homework. The first graded WeBWorK assignment will be given in the second week of classes. Your WeBWork assignment for the first week of class is to successfully log on at webwork.math.lsu.edu/webwork2/MATH4153-01-Spring2013/ and complete the introductory problem set. This initial problem set (Set 0) is designed to acquaint you with using WeBWorK, and will not be graded. I will check near the end to the first .p week of classes to make sure everyone has successfully completed this problem set. If you are enrolled in the course, but are not able to access WeBWorK, contact me (preferably by email).

Daily assignments from the books will also be made and posted on the course Moodle web site. Homework problems are indicative of the problems you will see on quizzes and examinations. They are crucial to your development of a mastery of calculus. Homework will not be collected and graded. Work additional problems beyond those assigned if needed to develop better understanding or greater facility. The beginning of each class period will be devoted to questions concerning previously assigned work.
