Contest Info and Rules

The LSU High School Math Contest will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2020 in the Business Education Complex and Patrick F. Taylor Building on campus.

The contest is comprised of an Individual and a Team Round. The Individual Round takes place in the morning and students can either take the Algebra/Geometry Test or the Open Test. The Team Round takes place after lunch and teams of up to ten can take the Team Test

A team can compete at the Division 1 or Division 2 level. Division 1 is the more competitive level and recommended for experienced teams. Division 2 is for teams that may be new to math competitions or teams that have younger, less experienced members. Both levels take the same tests but have separate rankings. Please use your judgement in determining the division at which your team will compete. If you are unsure, please contact Spencer Roby.

We hope that you and your school will be able to participate.

Test and Contest Rules

Algebra/Geometry Test

(Individual Round)

Participation is limited to students who are currently enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry. or Algebra 2. This test will consist of up to 20 multiple choice questions and 10 exact answer questions. The questions primarily cover material from Algebra I and Geometry. Click here to see past tests.

Open Test

(Individual Round)

Participation is open to any high school student - so students in Algebra 1, Geometry, or Algebra 2 may take this test instead of the Algebra/Geometry test. This test will consist of up to 20 multiple choice questions and 10 exact answer questions. The questions cover a variety of math concepts, but will not include specific questions related to calculus. Click here to see path tests.

Team Test

(Team Round)

Teams may consist of up to 10 students. Schools with less than 10 students may join to form a team. A school may enter more than one team, but only the highest scoring team of a school is eligible for medals. The tests consist of 10 exact answers, questions that cover a potpourri of math concepts.

Answers

Handwritten exact answers must be written with fractions reduced, radicals simplified, and denominators rationalized. No partial credit is given for answer only problems.

Calculators

No calculators are allowed on any of the tests

Tiebreakers

If needed, time is a tie-breaker. This means if two tests have the same score, the test that is turned in first wins.
