The conference talks at Goa University will be held in the Seminar Hall in Faculty Block B (Arts Faculty).

Getting there:

People staying at the Goa Univ guest house or International guest house: Please see this map of Goa University for walking directions.

People staying at or around Hotel Mandovi: The buses will leave from the Mandovi parking lot (across the street from the hotel) at 8:15 am. On Monday, Aug 9, there will be an extra bus leaving from Mandovi at 2:00 pm. (Ask at the reception if you plan on taking this bus.)

If you miss the bus you can get an auto rickshaw or taxi to the university. These do not run on meters so agree on the price in advance (around a couple hundred). It may be helpful to have this map, and this one.

Travel Tip: Remember to carry an umbrella or raincoat as well as water-resistant footwear! During during monsoon, Goa gets 300 cm of rain. Since it is very close to the sea, the temperature remains a moderate 25-32 C during August.

Transportation to the guest house:

Bus: The correct bus stop is Panaji. If you get off at a different stop, take a bus to Panaji. Goa University is about 8 to 9 kilometers from Panaji Bus Stand. One can hire a 2/3/4-wheeler taxi to the university.
From Panaji, there are also city buses going to the university. You may get down at the Hostel stop and walk to the Guest House.

Train: The main Railway Station in Goa is Madgao. Pananji is about 35 kilometers from Madgao. From Madgao station, the easiest option is to take a prepaid taxi to the university or hotel.
Alternatively,
  • Go to the Kadamba Bus Stand that is about 4 kilometers from the railway station by a 2/3/4-wheeler taxi.
  • Take a non-stop bus from Madgaon bus stand to Panaji. You have to purchase ticket at the counter before boarding the bus.
  • Get off at Goa Medical College.
  • The University is about 3 kilometers from the Medical College. Hire a 2/3-wheeler taxi to reach the university guest house.
If you get off at Vasco da Gama Railway station, board a non-stop bus to Panaji from about 200 meters outside the railway station. Get off at the Goa Mediacal College stop and proceed as suggested above.

If you get off at Karamli, you are closer to the university than from any other railway station. But, 2/3/4-wheeler taxis are the only option to proceed to the university from here. This is a good option for people coming from Bombay.

Air: Dabolim airport is about 30 kilometers from the university. The best option is to hire a prepaid taxi from the airport to the university (or hotel).

Transportation to the Hotel Mandovi and nearby hotels:
Hotel Mandovi has a free shuttle service from the airport and Karmali railway station between 8am and 8pm. If you are staying there, send an email to mandovireservation@rediffmail.com, addressed to Victor Monteiro with your flight or trail details.

If you are arriving at a different time or different railway station or staying at a hotel which does not have free airport pickup, then the easiest option is to get a prepaid taxi from the airport (or Madgao station). Or try one of the more adventurous ways above. (The hotels are in Panaji.)

Campus information: Avoid walking around the campus a lot at night as there many dogs and snakes. It is advisable carry a torch with you.

Smoking in public places is prohibited in the university and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the guest house.

There is a post office on the university campus.

There is a Branch of SBI with an ATM counter near the guest house.

Travel to Goa: If you will be arriving directly from a foreign country, it will be easiest to book your plane ticket all the way to Goa. The last leg will be a domestic flight.

If you are traveling within India, some options are listed below. A currency converter can be found here.

Air travel: There are a number of budget airlines within India: Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines, IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir, and Paramount Airways. You can find some reviews of airlines in India on this website. You can compare fares from different airlines and buy tickets on yatra.com or makemytrip.com (there may be a fee).

Train: Goa is well connected to all parts of India by rail. The station closest to the University is Karmali (20 Kms) but most trains do not stop there. Coming from north, Thivim (30 kms) is the next choice. Madgao (35 Kms) is the most important station and all trains passing through Goa stop there. This is the best choice.

You can find trains and book your ticket at the Indian Railways website. (Go to "trains between stations" and type the city name.) It is also possible to book your ticket at yatra.com or the Indian site of makemytrip.com. You can find a list of trains to Goa here and here.

Bus: If you want to consider taking a (long distance) bus, this website seems to have a pretty good compilation of the various options.
