Robert "Bob" Giles passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011. He and his wife Betti established a Math Education Fund for the LSU Department of Mathematics which, among other things, supports the annual Giles Senior Math Award, the highest math award for LSU undergraduates.
Born in 1934 in Georgia he earned his B.S. and Masters degree in geology from the University of Georgia. Robert Giles moved to Baton Rouge in 1979 where he worked as a geologist for Odom Offshore and later Tesla Offshore.
In his spare time he loved to read books on mathematics and physics, especially lectures by Feynman.
His wife Betti has requested that memorial donations be given to the
Giles Math Education Fund. This can be done online by going to:
Select: College of Science
then Mathematics Department
and write: Project 101084-Mathematics Education Fund in the comment field.
