Awards received by members of the department
Professor Milen Yakimov is the first recipient of the Carruth McGehee Award for Excellent Research by a Junior Faculty Member.
Jintao Cui, a doctoral student of Professor Susanne Brenner, received student paper prizes awarded at the 2009 SIAM SEAS Spring Meeting held in Columbia, SC. The selection committee was very impressed with his presentation of his research, as well as the contributions his research has made to mathematics.
Congratulations to Jasson Vindas, doctoral student of Ricardo Estrada, who has been awarded the Costa Rica Young Scientist Award. The prize is rotated among the different scientific areas, and is given to a young mathematician every 4 years. The first math winner, in 1992, also has an LSU connection.
Professor George Cochran received the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics from the Louisiana/Mississippi sections of the MAA. Nationwide, twenty-four mathematicians receive Sectional Distinguished Teaching Awards. Dr. Cochran will be the nominee from the Louisiana/Mississippi section for the national MAA Distinguished Teaching Award and will give an hour address at the 2009 meeting MAA meeting of the Louisiana/Mississippi section.
