Faculty Members Involved in the Project

Postdoctoral associates are not included in the following list, as participation in VIR courses and VIGRE activities are part of their duties.


  • Pramod Achar, algebra: Participated in a VIR course.
  • William Adkins. New Director of Graduate Studies. Works with the PIs in selecting the first year VIGRE trainees and organizing VIR courses.
  • Scott Baldridge, topology and education: Member of the steering committee. Involved in the organization of the summer program at LSU and interaction with the VIGRE REU and organizer of the summer high school program.
  • Susanne C. Brenner, scientific computing: Member of the steering committee. Faculty mentor for the VIGRE postdoctoral associate Andrew T. Barker. Organizes the Research Connection Program together with R. Perlis. Participated in a VIR course.
  • W. George Cochran, Associate Chair: Member of the steering committee. Works with the PIs and the Steering committee on all aspects of the program that involves undergraduate students. Observed the teaching of the postdoctoral associates in spring 2010. Organization of the High School Circuit program.
  • Daniel C. Cohen, topology: Member of the steering committee. Participates in a VIR course.
  • Elizabeth Dan-Cohen, algebra, infinite dimensional Lie algebras. Participated in a VIR course.
  • Jacek M. Cygan, abstract harmonic analysis: Summer program and the High School Math. Contest.
  • Oliver Dasbach, topology. Faculty mentor in a VIR course from the beginning of the grant. Faculty mentor for VIGRE postdoctoral associate H. M. Russell.
  • Mark Davidson, abstract harmonic analysis and representation theory: Member of the steering committee, Co-PI, in charge of organizing the summer program. Faculty advisor for the VIGRE student colloquium. VIGRE@LSU Coordinator during the first year.
  • Guoli Ding, combinatorics/graph theory: Faculty mentor in a VIR course, fall 2008, spring 2009, and spring 2010. Mentor for the postdoctoral associate Mark Bilinski.
  • Charles Egedy, Instructor: Mentoring undergraduate researchers Brandie Gilchrist and Rebekah Wascom.
  • Patrick Gilmer, topology. Faculty mentor for VIGRE postdoc Kearny.
  • Hongyu He, abstract harmonic analysis and representation theory: Faculty mentor in a VIR course fall 2009, spring 2010 and fall 2011. Mentored the undergraduate student P. Benge.

  • Jimmie Lawson, control theory, Lie semigroups: Faculty mentor in a VIR courses.
  • Robert Lax, algebraic geometry: Participated in the VIGRE summer REU, summer 2009.
  • Robert Lipton, material sciences/applied mathematics: Member of the steering committee. Faculty mentor in a VIR course, fall 2009. One of the faculty mentor for postdoctoral associate S. Armstrong.
  • Michael Malisoff, Mathematical systems and control theory: Participated in a VIR Course.
  • Frank Neubrander, analysis: Member of the steering committee. Involved in the organization of the summer program at LSU and interaction with the VIGRE REU. Mentoring the undergraduate student Jonathan W. Gardener.
  • Gestur Olafsson, abstract harmonic analysis and representation theory: Project Director and PI, Chair of the VIGRE steering committee. Works on all aspects of the program. VIR course mentor fall 2009 and spring 2010.
  • James Oxley, graph theory and combinatorics: Member of the steering committee, teaching mentor for graduate students and postdoctoral associates.
  • Robert Perlis, algebra and number theory: Member of the steering committee. Organizes the Research Connection Program together with S. Brenner. Taught course for Summer 2010 SMILE program. Also organized the Spring 2010 High School Math Circuit.
  • Leonard Richardson, abstract harmonic analysis and representation theory. Former Graduate Studies Director: Member of the steering committee. Worked with the PIs on all aspects concerning the graduate program and mentoring of graduate students.
  • Boris Rubin, geometric analysis. Mentor in VIR course in fall 2012.
  • Dan Sage, algebra and representation theory: Faculty mentor in a VIR course since spring 2009.
  • Ambar Sengupta, mathematical physics and probability: Participated in a VIR course in spring 2010.
  • Stephen Shipman, mathematical physics and the mathematics of material science: Faculty mentor in a VIR course, spring 2009. Mentored the undergraduate student T. Arbour.
