At the 2013 Choppin Honors Convocation the LSU College of Science honored the following faculty and students:

• Debra Kopcso received the TAF Undergraduate Teaching Award
• Paxton Turner was named College of Science Outstanding Sophomore
• Christine Derbins received the Dean's Award and College Honors
• Nathan Bush received College Honors
• Daniel Case received College Honors
• Jerome Avery Weston received College Honors

Six LSU students placed in the top 30% nationwide in the Putnam Mathematics Competition, led by Nathan Bush, whose score of 20 points placed him in the top 16%.  This annual competition is based on a day-long exam that is given each December.  This year nearly 4500 students from 400 colleges and universities participated, and out of a possible 120 points, the median score was 1.

The "6th Southeastern Lie Theory Workshop. Noncommutative Algebraic Geometry and Representation Theory" is taking place at LSU on May 10-12, 2013. The workshop starts on Friday morning and ends Sunday at noon. The full program can be viewed at

Sarah Seger received the 2013 Betti and Robert Giles Senior Mathematics Award. This is the LSU Math Department's most prestigeous award for undergraduate students. In the Fall Sarah Seger will be starting graduate school in mathematics at Rice University. 

The recipient of the 2013 Porcelli Senior Scholarship is Nathan Bush. In the Fall he will be starting graduate school in mathematics at Texas A&M.

Paxton Turner received the Porcelli Junior Scholarship. 

The 2013 Porcelli Lectures speaker is Professor S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan of the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences at NYU.

The 2013 Porcelli Lectures will be given by Professor S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan of the Courant Institute at NYU.

The lectures will take place in  the Design Building (Room 103) on Wednesday April 17, Thursday April 18, and Friday April 19,  from 4:30pm to 5:20pm.

Congratulations to Laura Rider (soon-to-be LSU PhD, advisor Prof. Achar), who has been awarded an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship to be used at MIT.
