Leaving LSU, and off to a PhD program

Among the 2013 graduates in math that are leaving LSU, and are heading to a PhD program, are Nathan Bush (Math, Texas A&M), Daniel Case (Physics, Northwestern University), Donovan B. Myers (Physics, Urbana-Champaign), Thomas Naugle (Math, University of Mississippi), and Sarah Seger (Math, Rice University).

Jimmie Lawson's and Yongdo Lim's paper to appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

Professor Jimmie Lawson (Boyd Professor Emeritus) and Professor Yongdo Lim (Sung Kyun Kwan University; LSU PhD 1996) have been notified that their paper "Weighted means and Karcher equations of positive operators" has been accepted for publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Geaux Gradschool

The LSU math department begins its 2013 Graduate Education and Acclimation to University eXperience (GEAUX) program, a two-week orientation aimed at preparing new graduate students for their time at LSU.  Included will be preliminary lectures covering background material for the first semester courses, introductions to the departmental staff, and panels in which current students share their experiences from years past.

Jenna Carpenter (PhD 1989, LSU) elected First Vice President of the MAA

Jenna Carpenter, Louisiana Tech University, was elected First Vice President of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Her term will last from February, 2014 through January, 2016.

SMILE upon LSU

For the fifth time the math department will host SMILE@LSU, a five week undergraduate summer program. This year it starts Monday June 10th and ends July 12th.  Participants are 24 undergraduates from the southern region; specifically: Morehouse College, UNO, University of Alabama,  Ole Miss,  University of South Alabama, Xavier University, Mississippi State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Southern, ULL, and LSU.

Six graduate students from LSU will be mentors.

Math Department hosts 2013 Summer REU

For the 21st time the Math Department hosts the annual Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). From June 2 to July 26 thirteen students will be working with Professors Neal Stoltzfus, Jorge Morales and Bill Hoffman as well as postdoc Greg Muller on projects centered around the theme
