## Board of Regents $30,000 Fellowships for 2008 Awarded A grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents provides three Doctoral Fellowships. The students who receive these Fellowships for studies beginning in fall 2008 will have no teaching duties so they can concentrate on their own studies. The stipends will be$30,000 per year and will run for four years, tuition-free.

The Department graduated its two hundred fiftieth PhD in December, 2006. One hundred seven of these were graduated during the years 1990 - 2006. The remaining one hundred forty three were graduated from 1935 - 1989.

## Graduate Student Research Award Presented

Jean Bureau, PhD December 2006, received the Pasquale Porcelli Award for Graduate Research Excellence.

The award was presented in recognition of his dissertation research in Representation Properties of Definite Lattices in Function Fields.

The purpose of the Award is to recognize those students who show the greatest promise of making significant contributions to mathematical research, both as graduate students and in their subsequent careers.

## Award-Winning Research Paper

Dr. Yongdo Lim (LSU PhD graduate in 1996) won a prize from the Korean Mathematics Society for the best paper of the year by a Korean mathematician. The prize was for his paper Birkhoff formula for conformal compressions of symmetric cones, which appeared in the American Journal of Mathematics, Vol 125 (2003),167-182. Congratulations to Yongdo Lim!
