Graduate Wins Distinguished Dissertation Award

Congratulations to Dr. Jasson Vindas, who completed his doctoral dissertation in 2009 under the direction of Prof. Ricardo Estrada in the Mathematics Department.  Dr. Vindas's dissertation, entitled Local Behavior of Distributions and Applications, has been honored with the University's annual  Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering and Technology.  Dr. Vindas is currently at a 3-year postdoctoral research position at the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Graduate Student Wins Postdoc

Congratulations to Silvia Jimenez, doctoral student of Prof. Robert Lipton.  Silvia has won a 3-year research postdoctoral job at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.   Silvia is the fifth pending PhD graduate for 2010 who has won a research postdoctoral position.

Graduate Student Wins Postdoc in Lausanne

Congratulations to Piotr Maciak, doctoral student of Prof. Jorge Morales, who has won a postdoctoral research position at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. This is a 9 month position and it starts in January 2011.

Distinguished Dissertation Award

Congratulations to Dr. Jasson Vindas, LSU Mathematics PhD graduate and student of Prof. Ricardo Estrada, for winning the annual Distinguished Dissertation Award of the College of Basic Sciences at LSU.

LSU Graduate receives NSF International Postdoc

Carolyn Chun, a 2009 LSU Ph.D., received an International Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. The NSF program supports “...highly meritorious research and education activities that present unique opportunities and offer potentially high benefits because of the vital and integral nature of the foreign collaboration.” The award will support Dr. Chun's research in combinatorics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Recent Graduate wins International Research Fellowship

Congratulations to Carolyn B. Chun, PhD graduate in 2009, who has won a 24-month International Research Fellowship  from the National Science Foundation.  Carolyn was a student of Prof. James Oxley, and she is working at  Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Postdocs at MSRI, CALTECH, IMA, and Texas A&M

Congratulations are in order to three pending PhD graduates for this year.

Ms. Anna Zemlyanova, who is a student of Prof. Yuri Antipov, has been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley for the fall of 2010.

Mr. Santiago Fortes, who is a student of Profs. Robert Lipton and Stephen Shipman, has been awarded a postdoctoral research position at the California Institute of Technology

Graduate Student Wins Postdoctoral Research Position

Congratulations to Jasson Vindas, doctoral student of Professor Estrada. Jasson has been awarded a three-year Research Postdoctoral Position at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Computer Algebra at the University of Gent in Belgium. 

$32,000 Board of Regents Doctoral Fellowships

The Louisiana Board of Regents has awarded the Mathematics Department 3 new Board of Regents Doctoral Fellowships.  These four-year fellowships will be for applicants during the fall and spring of 2009-10 who will begin study in August 2010.  The stipends will be $30,000 per year, with free tuition.  Additional support will be provided for research travel expenses.  The Department's proposal was top-ranked among all departments and subject areas in the state this year.
