Two outstanding math majors were honored at the 2013 Tiger Athletic Foundation Academic Excellence Gala.
Christine Derbins, double major in Math and Mass Communications, member of the LSU Track & Field team, with 4.0 GPA, received the 2013 Wally Pontiff, Jr. Academic Excellence Award.
Alexandra Boulet, Math major with a 4.0 GPA and a member of the LSU Softball Team, received the 2012 TAF Female Scholar Athlete of the year Award.
Math major Jeremy Tillay received the first prize in the Level 1 Math and Physical Science category of the LSU Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012.
Jordan Keller, Hannah Manuel and Alex Leder are three of the May 2012 graduates in math that are heading to graduate programs this Fall. All three received one of the 42 University Medals awarded for graduating with the highest undergraduate grade-point averages.
The LSU math department sent two teams of students to compete in the “Student Team Competition” held at the meeting of the La-Miss section of the MAA on Friday, March 2, 2012. There were 21 teams from a wide variety of schools in Louisiana and Mississippi at the competition. The LSU teams won first place (\$100) and third place (\$50) with scores of 124 and 108, respectively.
The first-place team consisted of Christine Derbins, Jordan Keller, Jeremy Tillay and Paxton Turner. The third-place team consisted of Jacob Desmond, Andrew Elias, Jesse Lu and Andrew Stewart.
LSU undergraduate math major Andrew Williamson was ranked at the 97th percentile on the recent William Lowell Putmam Mathematics Contest for undergraduate math majors. With a score of 56 out of 120 he was ranked 128th out of 4296.
Three LSU math majors, Philip Benge, Guillaume Dupré, and Hannah Manuel, won the first-place prize in the Student Team Mathematics Competition on February 25. The competition is a regional mathematics contest for college students in Louisiana and Mississippi, sponsored by the Louisiana-Mississippi section of the Mathematical Association of America. The LSU team dominated the competition, scoring 131 of 150 points possible. The second-place team only scored 109 points. Congratulations to Philip, Guillaume, and Hannah!
Congratulations to our Putnam team (Nickolas VanMeter, Tyler Barker, Rodrigo Farnham), and thanks to Jacek Cygan, the Putnam coach, and to Suat Namli, who assisted Professor Cygan and has left LSU after completing his Ph.D.
