The LSU Honors College News featured Math Major Bruno Beltran who graduated this May. He is the recipient of a 2013 Goldwater Fellowship, and a 2015 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship that will be supporting his PhD graduate studies in Systems Biology at Stanford University. His Honors Thesis under Professor Frank Neubrander was on Matrix Exponentiation without Scaling and Squaring.
Math majors Rachael Keller and Amanda Mayhall have each been awarded a SURE grant (Supervised Undergraduate Research Experiences) by the Louisiana Board of Regents.
This workshop is for undergraduate students who are considering applying to graduate school. The application process will be discussed, and helpful resources provided. A panel discussion will try to answer any questions attendees may have.
LSU students are invited to register for two upcoming Math Competitions. The Virginia Tech Regional Math Contest will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 9:00 - 11:30 A.M. (registration deadline Oct. 1). The Putnam Mathematics Competition is on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. (registration deadline Oct. 8). Both events will take place on LSU's campus.
For the fifth time the math department will host SMILE@LSU, a five week undergraduate summer program. This year it starts Monday June 10th and ends July 12th. Participants are 24 undergraduates from the southern region; specifically: Morehouse College, UNO, University of Alabama, Ole Miss, University of South Alabama, Xavier University, Mississippi State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Southern, ULL, and LSU.
Six LSU students placed in the top 30% nationwide in the Putnam Mathematics Competition, led by Nathan Bush, whose score of 20 points placed him in the top 16%. This annual competition is based on a day-long exam that is given each December. This year nearly 4500 students from 400 colleges and universities participated, and out of a possible 120 points, the median score was 1.
Sarah Seger received the 2013 Betti and Robert Giles Senior Mathematics Award. This is the LSU Math Department's most prestigeous award for undergraduate students. In the Fall Sarah Seger will be starting graduate school in mathematics at Rice University.
