Patricio Jara (LSU Ph.D. 2008) Receives NSF Research Grant

Patricio Jara (LSU, Ph.D. 2008, adviser Prof. Frank Neubrander) received a three year research grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Mathematical Sciences (Award #1008101) for his research on the “Numerical Inversion of the Laplace Transform and its Applications to Evolution Equations”. Congratulations Patricio!

Mihály Kovács (LSU, Ph.D. 2004) Receives New Zealand Mathematical Society's Award

Mihály (Misi) Kovács (LSU, PhD. 2004, adviser Prof. Frank Neubrander) is this year's sole recipient of the New Zealand Mathematical Society's “Early Career Award for Mathematical Research”. Misi's citation for the prize reads “for his innovative research in the field of stochastic partial differential equations, particularly their numerical approximation”. Congratulations Misi!

Andrew Barker Wins 2010 George Pólya Award for Mathematical Exposition from MAA

Congratulations to Andrew Barker, a VIGRE postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mathematics and the Center for Computation and Technology, who was awarded the 2010 George Pólya Award for mathematical exposition from the MAA. The George Pólya Award, established in 1976, is named after the renowned teacher and writer, and is given for articles of expository excellence published in The College Mathematics Journal.

Award-Winning Topology Video by Graduate Student

Congratulations to Mustafa Hajij. His topology video "Turaev surfaces" is the 2010 Dean's scholarship award winner at the LSU digital media festival.

Graduate Wins Distinguished Dissertation Award

Congratulations to Dr. Jasson Vindas, who completed his doctoral dissertation in 2009 under the direction of Prof. Ricardo Estrada in the Mathematics Department.  Dr. Vindas's dissertation, entitled Local Behavior of Distributions and Applications, has been honored with the University's annual  Distinguished Dissertation Award in Science, Engineering and Technology.  Dr. Vindas is currently at a 3-year postdoctoral research position at the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Brenner Selected as SIAM Fellow

Professor Susanne Brenner has been selected as one of the SIAM Fellows for 2010. This honorary distinction acknowledges nominated and selected members of the SIAM community as leading thinkers and ambassadors of applied mathematics and computational science. She was cited “For advances in finite element and multigrid methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations.” Congratulations!

Graduate Student Wins Postdoc in Lausanne

Congratulations to Piotr Maciak, doctoral student of Prof. Jorge Morales, who has won a postdoctoral research position at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. This is a 9 month position and it starts in January 2011.

LSU Graduate receives NSF International Postdoc

Carolyn Chun, a 2009 LSU Ph.D., received an International Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. The NSF program supports “...highly meritorious research and education activities that present unique opportunities and offer potentially high benefits because of the vital and integral nature of the foreign collaboration.” The award will support Dr. Chun's research in combinatorics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
