Control Theory and Optimization Group

Controls and optimization is one of the primary research areas in applied mathematics at LSU. It studies the effects of time- or state-dependent manipulated parameters in dynamical systems. The parameters, called controls, model the effects of interventions that can be applied to systems to achieve prescribed objectives, such as ensuring that their solutions track a desired behavior. State-dependent controls are called feedback controls. Members of the group and their students are listed below. Click on their names to learn about their activities. Their interests include feedback control, observer design, active set optimization, and robotics. Their research has included adaptive control, Hamilton–Jacobi equations, marine robotics, power electronics, state constrained and delayed systems, tracking and stability problems for disease dynamics, and nonlinear programming. The group has a notable record of extramural support. They have been awarded more than $3.2 million as Principal Investigators of Federal research grants, have produced many research publications in top Automation and Control Systems journals, and have presented many conference presentations and seminars. They have served on the editorial boards of many journals. They organize a Control and Optimization Seminar series, and interact with LSU engineering faculty who also study systems and controls. Their outreach and teaching includes the Mathematics Consultation Clinic. Their work has been reported on in several news articles.

The group provides a supportive environment for collaboration with, and mentorship of, its undergraduate, graduate student, and postdoctoral researchers.  A total of 31 Ph.D. students received their degrees under the supervision of current or emeritus group members. In addition to enrolling in core Ph.D.-level mathematics courses in algebra, analysis, and topology and in an introductory course in numerical analysis (e.g., Math 4065 at LSU, or a Ph.D.-level course that covers similar content) and meeting their other Ph.D. degree requirements, Ph.D. students specializing in control and optimization are especially encouraged to take Maths 7320 (Ordinary Differential Equations), 7330 (Functional Analysis), and 7550 (Differential Geometry), as well as topics courses on control and optimization that are often offered as specific course sections of Math 7390.
